I made a goal this summer to eat one thing that I've grown, even if I have to eat a dandelion salad. I think my little garden is coming along nicely, if slowly. I've had more successes than failures (I'm looking at you, carrots) and if all else fails, I can at least use the herbs, tiny as they are.
A couple of things survived being transplanted from my indoor seedling group: the basil and a single cilantro plant, along with a painfully slow-growing watermelon.
And I bought a couple of small bell pepper and tomato plants from a nursery. I am insanely proud of that little tomato. I wedge it into every conversation I have, and sometimes into conversations that strangers are having.
My best grower, by far, is this guy. I didn't invite him to the party, and for all I know he is just an extremely hearty and thick weed, but he sure is healthy looking.

I just was reading, in OPrah magazine no less, that weeds are good to eat!!!! So eat away! (but you do have to watch out for the poisonous ones)...but really - they talked about when the best time to eat dandelions was...crazy...
ReplyDeleteWe've had good and bad years growing stuff out here. A couple of years ago we had some tomato plants that were producing constantly.
ReplyDeleteI think the last picture is a sun flower.
I would love to have a garden someday and grow berries (since I live them and they are so dang expensive), but I also hate hard work, especially of the outdoor variety. It's a bad combination. Your stuff looks awesome and edible!
ReplyDeleteI love love your blog. Can never get enough photos and your writing in wonderful I have the most talented grand children ever. I can hardly wait until you go to Ca. and post the whole trip with photos. Your mom told me about the hair clip last night. You did the right thing. Children sure can keep us humble.
